What Is the Highest Plausible Redshift of Luminous Quasars?

چکیده
The recent discoveries of luminous quasars at high redshifts imply that black holes more massive than a few billion solar masses have been assembled already when the universe was less than a billion years old. We show that the existence of these black holes is not surprising in popular hierarchical models of structure formation. For example, the black hole needed to power the quasar SDSS 1044-0125 at z = 5.8 can arise naturally from the growth of stellar-mass seeds forming at z > 10, when typical values are assumed for the radiative accretion efficiency (∼ 0.1), and the bolometric accretion luminosity in Eddington units (∼ 1). Nevertheless, SDSS 1044-0125 yields a non–trivial constraint on a combination of these parameters. Extrapolating our model to future surveys, we derive the highest plausible redshift for quasars which are not lensed or beamed, as a function of their apparent magnitude. We find that at a limiting magnitude of K ∼ 20, quasar surveys can yield strong constraints on the growth of supermassive black holes out to z ∼ 10. High Redshift Quasars and Star Formation History
Quasars are among the most luminous objects in the universe , and they can be studied in detail up to the highest known redshift. Assuming that the gas associated with quasars is closely related to the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, quasars can be used as tracer of the star formation history in the early universe. We have observed a small sample of quasars at redshifts 3 ∼ < z ∼ < 5 an...
متن کاملEarly Growth and Efficient Accretion of Massive Black Holes at High Redshift
Black-hole masses of the highest redshift quasars (4 < ∼ z < ∼ 6) are estimated using a previously presented scaling relationship, derived from reverberation mapping of nearby quasars, and compared to quasars at lower redshift. It is shown that the central black holes in luminous z > ∼ 4 quasars are very massive ( ∼ 10M⊙). It is argued that the mass estimates of the high-z quasars are not subje...
متن کاملBlack Hole Masses of High-redshift Quasars
Black-hole masses of distant quasars cannot be measured directly, but can be estimated to within a factor 3 to 5 using scaling relationships involving the quasar luminosity and broad-line width. Why such relationships are reasonable is summarized. The results of applying scaling relationships to data of quasars at a range of redshifts (z ≤ 6.3) are presented. Luminous quasars typically have mas...
متن کاملSix More Quasars at Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey
We present imaging and spectroscopic observations for six quasars at z ≥ 5.9 discovered by the CanadaFrance High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS). The CFHQS contains sub-surveys with a range of flux and area combinations to sample a wide range of quasar luminosities at z ∼ 6. The new quasars have luminosities 10 to 75 times lower than the most luminous SDSS quasars at this redshift. The least luminous q...
متن کاملSearches for Quasars at z> 5
Quasars continue to be the most luminous objects known in the universe but no longer have the largest redshifts. I review current techniques for finding quasars at z > 5 and the status of current optical surveys. I compare the spectra of known quasars with z ≈ 5 with the spectra of some recently discovered galaxies with z > 5 to see what we may expect in the future from surveys for high redshif...
